THE STORY
Thirty years ago, Bill Atwell, a lawyer, and Jean, his wife,an artist, toured the East coast of the United States and Canada. They were looking for their Shangri-la. They found it! Pleasant Bay----a small fishing village snuggled between two mountains on the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton's West Shore.
Just as they were looking for a place in their minds, they were also looking for the enjoyment of fresh seafood. They found that it was almost non-existent. They travelled 4000 miles and came away hungry.
They returned to Pleasant Bay and with the encouragement of the local people, they built The Black Whale--a unique form of pine and log construction.
Of course, 30 years has seen the growth of other establishments in the area, but The Black Whale is still the only all-seafood restaurant on the Island.
